Trauma is a fact of life. It does not, however, have to be a life sentence.”-Peter A. Levine

PTSD Treatment and Trauma Therapy in Miami, FL & online throughout the sate of Florida

Trauma is kind of a bad word in the world of mental health. Yet it explains and gives a framework to heal the most difficult symptoms. First, let’s establish that trauma is not just defined by one big, horrible event. It’s sad that when we think of trauma, we only think of rape, murder, war, etc.

There’s no doubt those are extremely traumatic events! However, we don’t realize how traumatic and disturbing things like neglect, abandonment, rejection, betrayal, bullying, etc. could be. Relational violations have a powerful impact on how we approach life, and they typically lead to complex trauma, especially if experienced early in life, goes on for a long period of time, it’s inflicted by a caregiver, and if you still are in contact with the person responsible for the trauma.

As trauma-informed therapists, we will help you make sense of it all, help you go in and heal the wounds that are causing you so much suffering and shame. You’ll feel present, in control of your emotions, and connected to others. Regardless of how big or small, you feel your experiences are, you have a place in therapy, and we would be honored to walk with you in this journey of PTSD treatment and trauma therapy.

Symptoms of Trauma

Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk does a beautiful job explaining the aftermath of trauma in this 4-minute video. Complex trauma is a little different from traditional PTSD. If you’ve experienced trauma early in life, you might deal with:

If you’re dealing with any of these issues, it may be time to get support from a trauma therapist. By taking that next step and speaking with a professional, you may be able to get a better understanding of the roots of these issues. Finding the freedom to express yourself is important to no longer having trauma define you. Why not find that support in PTSD treatment and trauma therapy in Miami, FL?

PTSD Treatment and Trauma Therapy

Get support with Complex Trauma

There are many forms of trauma. Sometimes, people don’t think that trauma is what they are dealing with. They know something is wrong, but they wouldn’t label it “trauma’. However, there are such things as Big T Trauma and little t trauma. The Big T Trauma is often caused by a sudden traumatic event in someone's life. There’s typically no doubt that what you’ve experienced is traumatic. However, with C-PTSD, small traumas build up over time often beginning in childhood. They are pretty insidious and clients often have difficulty accepting that these events were traumatic and could still be affecting them. They typically have parents who meant well and they’re pretty high functioning adults yet, something feels off. The result of “little T” trauma is typically poor self-esteem, difficulty making decisions, underestimating your abilities, self-sabotage, difficulties with intimacy & emotions, etc. Regardless of how high functioning you may be, trauma can still affect you. There may have been issues that were normalized in your childhood, that you have never processed and that could explain what feels “off” to you.

Seeking help, admitting vulnerability, and revisiting unpleasant emotions are often the main reasons people avoid seeking help. However, what we resist persists! So we end up finding ourselves in very similar situations time and time again. That’s usually a sign that there’s something we must work on so we can finally resolve it.  Although trauma therapy can at times feel like a workout, it mostly leaves you feeling restored, empowered, and hopeful.  Therapy for trauma will show you that you’re in control of your life and not your past experiences. We are here to hold space for you and talk through whatever is holding you back.

The Psych Blossoms Therapy Approach to PTSD Treatment and Trauma Therapy

It is challenging to continue through your day-to-day tasks when you’re dealing with trauma. No matter how high-performing you are, we all need a break. We cannot perform at work, school, take care of a family, or do much else when we are not taking care of our own mental health needs. That is where trauma therapy can help you process and regain control. If you are struggling to find ways of coping that don’t include injurious or addictive behaviors, then I can help.

In therapy, we may draw from a multitude of therapeutic approaches. Our primary way to treat trauma is through EMDR therapy. However, it is important to know that EMDR is not a quick-fix modality. It is great to help to move forward from past traumas, but more work still needs to be done to help you integrate healthy coping mechanisms in your day-to-day life. We may use components of internal family systems, CBT, DBT, and psychoanalytic psychotherapy in addition to EMDR therapy.

Regardless of what you’re dealing with, we are here to be your guide as you heal and recover. We will move you beyond simply dealing with the symptoms of trauma or being given diagnosis after diagnosis etc. Yet never feeling like someone actually gets you. You will be able to feel like yourself again or move to a space that feels normal for you. Together we will address boundaries, improve your focus, relationships, and self-esteem.
